Dynamic Taxonomies

چکیده
End-user interactive access to complex information is one of the key functionalities of knowledge management systems. Traditionally, access paradigms have focused on retrieval of data on the basis of precise specifications: examples of this approach include queries on structured database systems, and information retrieval. However, most search tasks, and notably those typical of a knowledge worker, are exploratory and imprecise in essence: the user needs to explore the information base, find relationships among concepts, and thin alternatives out in a guided way. Examples of this type of access include the selection of the “right” product to buy, of a candidate for a job, but also finding the likely cause of a malfunction, and so forth. Indeed, exploratory access applies to an extremely wide range of practical situations. Traditional access methods are not helpful in this context, and new access paradigms are needed. Effective end-user access requires a holistic approach, in which modeling, interface, and interaction issues are considered together.

Analysis and Validation of Information Access Through Mono, Multidimensional and Dynamic Taxonomies
Access to complex information bases through multidimensional, dynamic taxonomies (also improperly known as faceted classifications) is becoming a hot concept both in research and in industry. In this paper, the major shortcomings of conventional, monodimensional taxonomic approaches, such as the independence of different branches of the taxonomy and insufficient scalability, are discussed. The ...
متن کاملChapter 7 Taxonomy Design
This chapter discusses the design of taxonomies to be used in dynamic taxonomy systems. Although the only actual requirement of dynamic taxonomies is a multidimensional classification, i.e., objects are classified under more than one concept, an organization by facets is normally used. In the first section, we provide guidelines for the design of DT taxonomies, which include the automatic const...
متن کاملExploratory Access to Wikipedia through Faceted Dynamic Taxonomies
Users currently access Wikipedia through two traditional paradigms, text search and hypertext navigation. We believe that user access can be significantly improved by supporting a systematic conceptual exploration of the knowledge base through dynamic taxonomies with a faceted taxonomy organization. This approach allows the easy manipulation of sets of documents and the systematic and intuitive...
متن کاملResults in Dynamic Taxonomy and Faceted
Metadata access to complex information bases through multidimensional, dynamic taxonomies (aka faceted search) is rapidly becoming a hot topic both in research and in industry, where e-commerce applications based on this access paradigm are becoming pervasive. The dynamic taxonomy model was the first model to fully exploit multidimensional classification schemes and to integrate query and explo...
متن کاملMerging Specialist Taxonomies and Folk Taxonomies in Wordnets - A case Study of Plants, Animals and Foods in the Danish Wordnet
In this paper we investigate the problem of merging specialist taxonomies with the more intuitive folk taxonomies in lexical-semantic resources like wordnets; and we focus in particular on plants, animals and foods. We show that a traditional dictionary like Den Danske Ordbog (DDO) survives well with several inconsistencies between different taxonomies of the vocabulary and that a restructuring...
متن کاملBLUSNO: A System for Orientation, Visualization, and Quality Assurance of SNOMED CT Using Abstraction Networks
Biomedical ontologies are generally very large and complex. Their size and complexity make quality assurance a difficult and timeconsuming task. Compact networks called abstraction networks can be derived to summarize the content and structure of ontologies and support their quality assurance. The Biomedical Layout Utility for SNOMED CT (BLUSNO) is a system for automatically deriving and visual...
